The educational philosophy of the Fort Collins Museum & Discovery Science Center is to respect and address the needs of diverse learners and learning styles. We strive to create the foundation for life-long learning within the students who visit our facility and aim to provide opportunities for all visitors to explore, to investigate, and to have fun. Now that Discovery Science Center and the Fort Collins Museum have partnered, teachers can expect us to continue to be a great educational resource and experience for their students.
working with your curriculum needs
Our staff works directly with the Curriculum Coordinators of the Poudre School District to align the learning objectives for our tours, programs, and laboratory experiences with local and state curriculum standards. We believe that our services to students and teachers complement classroom learning and enhance, through hands-on opportunities and immersion with real objects, students’ understanding of historic concepts and scientific phenomena.
learning about science
Over the last 20 years, Discovery Science Center has provided K-12 students the chance to form conclusions about science phenomena on their own through engaging activities and interactive exhibits. Our use of “planned discovery” allows children to return year after year and make fresh, more advanced observations about science as their critical thinking skills develop.
Our Virtual Space Community partnership with Space Center Houston provides another source of specific space-themed curriculum to help fulfill the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) National Education Standards and State Education Standards.
learning about history
The Fort Collins Museum has welcomed grade-school students studying local history for over three decades, regularly evaluating and updating our tours and programs to reflect changing theories of museum education. We present an inclusive narrative of local history, sharing the stories of Native Americans, Euro-Americans, Hispanics, and Germans from Russia who all have called the Fort Collins area home.
