African Americans in the West: Charley Clay

There was much more racial diversity in the West of the mid 1800s to early 1900s than is often depicted in popular media and Hollywood productions. Though the presence of African Americans in the West is frequently ignored in history texts, there were substantial groups of black farmers, trappers, cowboys, miners, lawmen, business owners, and soldiers in Colorado, including the city of Fort Collins. Nautilus

Perhaps one of Jules Verne's most enduring images is that of Captain Nemo’s majestic submarine, the Nautilus, traveling 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The Nautilus has ties to Fort Collins, if one has seen the classic Walt Disney film based on Verne’s work. The look of the entire film, especially the submarine and diving suits, sprang from the mind of Fort Collins’ own Harper Goff.

Election Day: 1904

As recent events have shown, election season can be a time of controversy and change. Elections are fraught with rumors of voter fraud and electoral shenanigans. Too be honest, there’s usually plenty of blame to go around - regardless of issue, or party affiliation.

Electricity

In 1882, the first commercial power station opened on Pearl Street in lower Manhattan, thanks to the early work of Thomas Alva Edison. By the end of the 1880s, other cities, including Fort Collins, boasted power stations of their own. How did the residents of Fort Collins greet those first tantalizing glimpses of the Electric Age? Local school superintendent W.H. McCreery was enthusiastic, noting “The only objection a western man can well make to it is that he cannot light his cigar at it.”
